古い友人を訪ねるとき

長い間会っていなかった古い友人を訪ねるとき、私はいつもどんなお土産を持っていくかを慎重に考えます。彼らは人生経験が豊富なので、高価な贈り物やメディアで宣伝されている有名なお菓子には興味を示しません。その代わりに、シンプルだけれど本当に質の高いものを好みます。

武平（ぶへい）まんじゅう

だからこそ、私はたいてい「武平（ぶへい）まんじゅう」を持っていきます。これは栃木のまんじゅうの名品のひとつだと思います。しかし、簡単には手に入りません。そのお店は私の家から往復で約50キロ離れた場所にあり、この種類のまんじゅうを売っているのはそこだけです。現金しか使えず、オンライン販売もありません。電話で予約をしない限り、たいてい正午までに売り切れてしまいます。

手に入れるのは難しいが努力する価値はある

手に入れるのは難しいですが、努力する価値があると私は思います。皮は柔らかくもちもちしていて、餡はやさしく上品な甘さです。昔ながらの包装紙ですら、懐かしく特別な気持ちにさせてくれます。食べるたびに、本当に素晴らしいと思うのです。

A Special Souvenir for Old Friends

When I visit my old friends after a long time, I always think carefully about what souvenir to bring.  Since they have a lot of life experience, they are not interested in expensive gifts or famous sweets that are advertised in the media. Instead, they prefer something simple but truly high in quality.

That is why I usually bring Buhei Manju. I think it is one of the masterpieces of manju in Tochigi. However, it is not easy to buy. The shop is about 50 kilometers round trip from my house, and it is the only place that sells this one type of manju. They accept only cash, and there is no online shopping. Unless I make a reservation by phone, it is usually sold out by noon.

It is difficult to get, but I believe it is worth the effort. The skin is soft and chewy, and the bean paste has a gentle, elegant sweetness. Even the old-fashioned wrapping paper gives me a nostalgic and special feeling. Every time I eat it, I think it is truly wonderful.
